Mountain Cycling Training will require you to spend time on and off the bike. There is strength and endurance involved in climbing hills and doing sprints. You will also need to know how to handle off road conditions like descents and cornering through thick brush and forests, dealing with mud conditions and how to handle rocks and boulders. You will need to train yourself to rest and recover for the best benefits.

Train on different types of terrain so your muscles can all get a workout. Find paths that require you to stand on your pedals and shift your weight, this will exercise your hamstrings and gluts and not make your quads do all the work. Climbing hills will increase your aerobic endurance and flat country will increase your stamina. Balance your workout terrains to avoid working too much in any one area.

Wear a heart monitor to measure your efforts. You can get one made specifically for cycling that will show your heart rate, calorie burn, speed and distance. There are some models that will show you comparative information and they also come with a GPS feature. Power meters measure your power output.

To prepare you should gradually increase the muscle and connective tissue temperatures. This will avoid a feeling of tightness, prevent injury and cramping. Warming up for 20 to 45 minutes and stretching is recommended.

Focus on your workouts, train at 90 rpm for 5 to 10 minutes at low pedal resistance. Increase resistance after 10 minutes, breath and relax. Stretch your shoulders, lower back, calves, hamstrings, neck and quads when you dismount.

Weight training will assist you with control of your bike in challenging areas. Front squats, dead lifts and bench presses will all increase your strength. A stability ball is a great prop to use for inverted rows, push ups and chin-ups.

Prepare your body for the ride, three months before begin drink electrolytes when training. Two months before the ride pay attention to mental and physical fatigue and when it is likely to happen. At these points an electrolyte drink will stabilize blood sugar levels and provide amino acids. On hot days drink water every 35 to 40 minutes and on cool days every 45 minutes. One month before the ride take a balanced vitamin supplement and eat well-balanced meals including whole grains, vegetables and fresh fruit.

The day before the event eat plenty of carbs and a moderate amount of protein and fat. Foods that contain protein and fiber can bulk you up meaning extra pit stops. Drink enough fluids but not too much. On the day of the race have a bagel, toast or pancakes and allow two hours to digest. Coffee and tea are diuretics and will increase pit stops. Stay hydrated, drink a liter of water of electrolyte every hour, replenish carbs and avoid high fat, fiber and protein. Mountain Cycling Training is a full body workout that will help you win the race.

For most Americans, the initial images that come to mind when one mentions sports are group athletics on a field. Football, baseball, and basketball are the holy trinity of sporting events States-side, but to Europeans, older and more traditional activities reign supreme.

Those in the United States might not understand the appeal of the race, but getting to know The Tour de France means starting to get excited about watching people on bicycles, too. For most amateur athletes, even a vague understanding of how fit one has to be to even consider making it to the end, let alone winning, is enough to give the race a little bit of time in between other television programming.

One of the biggest sporting events not just in France, but all over Europe, is The Tour de France. A race that pits riders from countries all over the world against one another, themselves, and the elements, it is not a race for the faint of heart. Lasting over three weeks, the race is broken down into day-long segments, known as stages, which can involve anything from the final sprint into Paris to climbing some of the most heart-popping sections of the Alps...on nothing but one's own leg power.

In fact, a number of riders have actually not survived The Tour de France, whether it was succumbing to heart attacks after ingesting methamphetamine while climbing part of the hills, or simply not being able to keep a bicycle on the road in times of great exhaustion. Riding the race has been compared to running in a marathon non-stop for a month, and it's no wonder why this seems an appropriate description once viewers take a single look at those treacherous mountain passes.

It's not just mountain passes, though. The race usually weaves in and out of cities, and traditionally wraps up with a triumphant sprint down busy city streets in Paris. The race is also known for varying in length, with the route changing every year. Sometimes, the difference can be as sizable as a few hundred miles, but usually it's more of a matter of routes. Anyone who wants to participate, though, should be in top form, as even very athletic riders talk of experiencing a great deal of trouble at the prospect of tackling the race.

The Tour de France is known for the toll it takes on both the body and the mind, to say nothing of the bicycle itself. Add to that the fact that it's possible to never win a single portion of the race, but still triumph at the end, and no wonder riders are exhausted and disoriented for much of the experience, unsure of exactly where they stand in the rank. That only makes it more fun for the fans, who crowd the streets to shout encouraging words to the riders at every turn.

And while Americans might not have historically cared very much about bicycle racing, that all changed in recent years.. Not only were all of the Americans hanging on the daily results, but there was a huge rise in the popularity of long distance bicycling. Ever since this historic reign of terror, interest in the race has been the standard.

Who managed to change American opinion on The Tour de France? A single rider, Lance Armstrong, who managed to win The Tour de France not once, not twice, not three times, but SEVEN times, in a row. He managed to come back from a devastating cancer diagnosis to triumph in the race, and led to a lot of bicycling-related patriotism for those Americans who might not have even been interested in the race in the first place.

But whether it's cheering for an obscure 20-something who might just have his lucky day, poring over old film footage of racers making their way up the mountains in grainy black and white, or getting excited for Lance Armstrong and wondering if an American will ever do that well again, there's no denying the appeal of The Tour de France.

Damian Papworth, a keen cyclist understands how important hydration is in the sport, at all levels. As such, he created the Cycling Water Bottle website, giving free advice on bicycle water bottles

We've all seen those commercials that tell us that our bodies are made up of a large percentage of water. And while it may be hard to believe, the reality is that water is the central force of life. We are told to drink several glasses of water during the day as a way to promote our overall health. Doctors and nutritionists recommend that we make a conscious effort to stay hydrated in order to stay in our best physical shape.

The functions of water in the body are manifold. It is responsible for the transportation and nutrients and the elimination of waste products. Water lubricates joints and tissues and facilitates digestion. It regulates temperature through sweating and plays an important role in the function of several organs and glands.

Water and hydration are especially important when it comes to physical activity.

In order to perform physically and athletically, hydration is key. Physical activity and exercise causes us to sweat, effectively losing water. When we lose water, our bodies have to work harder to work. Studies show that a loss of only one percent of one's body weight from sweating is related to a drop in blood volume. This drop in blood volume requires that our hearts work harder to move blood throughout our bodies, meaning that physical activity becomes more difficult. Dehydration during exercise can have several adverse effects, including cramps, dizziness, exhaustion and heat stroke.

It is very important for athletes to pay specific attention to hydration while working out.

Monitoring hydration and figuring out when to rehydrate is a trial-and-error process. All individuals are different, and each person must decide what works for him or her. The amount of fluid to take in during sport depends upon the length and intensity of exercise as well as the individual athlete. When taking into consideration other factors such as high altitude and temperature, the hydration process can be even more complicated. With time, however, most athletes come to know what works and what doesn't.

Nowadays, hydration is not achieved only through water. While many athletes insist that good old H2O is the best remedy for a thirsty throat, tons of sports drinks are on the market today. It is sometimes hard to know which sports drinks are worth it.

There is no definitive answer, however, when it comes to the real effectiveness of sports drinks. They contain electrolytes important to take in after intense exercise, but these electrolytes come accompanied by sugars, syrups and chemicals that are not always the best.

The best idea is to simply proceed with caution. Remember that sports drinks like Gatorade and PowerAde have calories - about 200 per bottle, in fact. Such calories are great to take in after a highly intense work-out, not necessarily after a 20-minute walk.

Hydration is key to performance and well-being with or without athletic activity added into the mix. Sports, however, require a special attention to the issue not required by other parts of life.

Damian Papworth, a keen amateur cyclist, recently put together the Cycling Water Bottle website. He knows how important a bike water bottle is to hydration on the big rides.

For most of us, cycling is a distant, even obscure sport. We know very little, if anything, about it. While a bicycle is a familiar object, one we learn to ride as children and continue to enjoy time on as adults, it is not often one we associate with athletic activity. Super athlete Lance Armstrong has brought some attention to the sport in recent years with his superior performance at the Tour de France and other cycling events. Nevertheless, it remains low on the radar of most sports fans around the world.

This lack of attention, however, is not due to lack of importance or lack of benefit. In fact, cycling is an extremely interesting sport to follow and a very healthy sport to practice.

The bike itself was invented as a means of transport. Beyond the function of getting riders from one place to another, it also serves as a primary piece of equipment in sport and athletics.

Cycling races date back to the 19th century. From the 1890s up through the mid 1900s, cycling was an extremely popular sport around the world. This time period is referred to as the "Golden Age of Cycling." Over the years, the sport's popularity diminished. The Tour de France, which began in 1903, remains a premier world athletic event, giving some clout to the sport. The Olympic Games also feature cycling. That said, the sport remains quite ignored.

There are many different types of races and competitions. Events may last for minutes, hours and even days, and competition may be individual or team. Mountain biking has become increasingly popular in recent years (even being included as an Olympic sport), as have road racing and indoor dome competition.

Cycling, however, is not only for professionals. In fact, it is gaining momentum among amateur athletes looking to spice up their cardio workouts.

The sport offers tons of benefits, just like most physical activity. It is linked to improved physical and mental health.

Cycling is primarily a cardiovascular activity, much like running, swimming and rowing. It differs from similar cardio work-outs is in that it is low-impact and therefore much easier on joints and bones than, for example, jogging. Cyclers burn calories and fat during work-outs (though how many calories are burned depends largely upon effort) and is a great cardio alternative for those with arthritis, past sports injuries or problems with obesity.

Those looking to try out cycling have both indoor and outdoor options. Indoor spin classes are popping up in gyms all over and seem to be all the rage. For those who prefer to be outside, the cycling options are endless. All that's necessary is a bike.

If you don't know much about cycling yet, it may be time to start doing some research. Check your TV Guide to find out when an event will be featured on ESPN or another sports channel, and head to your local bike shop to see what equipment it has to offer.
