Tandem Bicycles Are Built For Two
January 11, 2009 by Robert
Tandem bicycles have advantages and disadvantages depending on many variables. If there are two people on a tandem bicycle that are very honest, there probably will not be any problems with one person not pulling their own weight. The person on the back of a bicycle could get away with massive fraud if the person on the front of the tandem bicycle is not vigilant. The person on the front seat of a tandem bicycle will not be able to check easily on the efforts of their partner. They might be the only one pedaling the bicycle, and the person on the back could get a completely free ride.
A tandem bicycle might have disadvantages depending on the weight of the two riders that take their positions on one of these bicycles. A heavier person on a tandem bicycle will need more effort on the part of both riders. A tandem bicycle might produce extra work for the lighter person who might be much better off on a bicycle alone. Each rider might want to weigh these disadvantages before starting out on a trip. Tandem bicycles provide for a close bond for the two riders. In order to have a great ride, the two people on a bicycle will have to work together for a great time.
Tandem Bicycles Require Some Skill And Care
Riding one of these bicycles is not just as easy as riding a single bicycle. People need to have at least a bit of practice and knowledge before a positive experience one of these special bicycles. Two people working together can make a bicycle go faster, and the brakes need to be very good in order to stop a speeding tandem bicycle. The two riders need to be coordinated and organized before riding successfully. If one person is applying the brake while the other is pedaling furiously, the bike is not going to work perfectly. Proper coordination can make a significant difference in the movement of the ride. Working together to make a tandem bicycle operate can be a rewarding experience.
A tandem provides a nice experience for couples or family members that want to stay together. A parent can take their child for a great ride, and they will not have to worry about the child falling behind. The child will be with them all of the time. A couple can ride closely together on one of these wonderful bikes although a slower rider may inhibit a stronger rider when on separate bikes. These are also excellent for handicapped people. They will get the chance to get out and have a ride on a bicycle helped by a person without the same disadvantages.

Years ago, my wife and I talked about getting a tandem bike, but in our research(limited as it was), we could only find bikes with only one chain, thus each set of pedals moved in unison. A former co-worker of mine once talked as if that’s the way they all were. (I had seen him and his wife out riding theirs.)
If that’s the way they all are, then they’re not for us…but if some of them are built so that one rider can pedal while the other rests(even with the person’s feet resting on the pedals), that’s fine with us!
