Mountain Biking: How to Handle Ruts

January 27, 2009 by Robert · Leave a Comment

When you're enjoying an adventure in mountain biking, it's inevitable that you'll encounter ruts along back country roadways. You always need to be cognizant of bicycle safety, and one of the skills you should master if you're a mountain bike enthusiast, is how to handle getting out of a rut without sustaining injury. The article that follows provides some very valuable tips.

How to Handle Ruts While Mountain Biking

Every mountain biker will come across ruts occasionally. Ruts are formed when heavy vehicle like trucks, trailers rides across a wet, muddy area or when the same path is used repeatedly by bikers, causing erosion of the soil.

Knowing how to handle ruts will help keep you away from painful crash.

• First decide whether you are going to ride the bike through the rut, or you just want to get away from the rut. If the rut is not very deep and you think you can ride it out, then ride it out. If the rut is very difficult to ride it out, take the path of least resistance to avoid going through the rut.
• If you accidentally get into the rut, then do not panic. Try to stay cool. Some people tend to panic about being in a rut and try to get out immediately, but this could be disastrous.
• If you want to get out of rut, slow down your bike and turn your bike's wheel towards the ruts side to get out. This will allow you to roll out of rut without hitting its wall with the side of your tire.
• Cross the rut instead of falling into it. To do this make a sharp move sideways and across the rut as close to perpendicular to the rut as you can get. You will have to do this act quickly as there is risk of falling into the rut. Doing this takes a long practice and you should first try on the flat surface that has small ruts.
• Opt for shallow, wide established ruts if you have to or want to ride one. Fresh, deep and narrow or muddy ruts often lead to crashes as they are difficult to ride and your tire or pedal has a fairly good chance of hitting the side or slipping into the rut.

Interesting History of Mountain Biking

January 17, 2009 by Robert · Leave a Comment

Mountain biking is really popular these days, but do you know who you have to thank for that?

When it comes to mountain biking, everybody who takes part does it for a different reason. It could be that they enjoy the leisurely rides along the countryside, it could be that they want to keep fit, or it could be that they want to take part in extreme biking. Whatever your reasons are for taking part in mountain biking, when you look back into mountain bike history, you will see that it wasn't always as popular as it is today.

The History of Mountain Bikes

One of the main reasons why mountain biking is more popular today than it was in the 1970's for example, is because the bikes today are designed much better than they used to be. The way they are designed now has made biking more accessible to more people. So whilst it may still have been popular back in the 1970's, these days it is much more accessible to a wider range of people.

If you were to look at when mountain biking first started, you will notice that it was in California where a group of enthusiasts got together. They decided to try out downhill racing and that was the main type of mountain biking that was enjoyed right at the beginning. Today it is still as popular, but it is not the only type of biking enjoyed by enthusiasts these days. The tracks that were ridden along were exactly the same back then as they are today, it is only the bikes that have really changed.

The main trouble with the bikes when they were first designed, was that they were not overly sturdy. The bikes today are built to withstand practically everything that can be thrown at them. This makes them ideal for extreme biking. The frames have been made lighter, yet stronger at the same time. There are also more gears on mountain bikes today too. Riders first started to change their bikes when they wanted to adapt to downhill runs and routes. That is how the typical modern day mountain bike started out.

The bikes that were mainly on sale when mountain biking was first created, were ones that were created only for the road. So that is where they were mainly ridden. People did start to take their bikes off road, but it was not as popular. It was the enthusiasts within California which changed this and they thought about creating a bike that could handle all terrains.

So overall the main reason why you can now enjoy mountain biking off the road over all kinds of different terrain is down to those enthusiasts in California. It all started back in the 1970's and thanks to those enthusiasts mountain biking is now more popular than ever before. Useful Facts About Bicycle Racks

January 13, 2009 by Robert · Leave a Comment

Bicycle racks are necessary if you want to secure your bicycle(s) whenever you leave them unattended, and these are devices that you use to securely attach your bike(s) and also to prevent the bicycle(s) from being stolen. You can secure your bicycle by using a bike lock, and the bicycle rack is then fastened to anything that is solid and unmovable, or simply to the ground.

Early Racks Were Rather Ineffective

In the beginning, bicycle racks were made so that you could secure just one wheel to any device including concrete pieces set in the ground, or to metal pieces into which your bike’s wheel is placed. However, these early versions were found to be less than very effective, since a determined thief could easily detach the wheel and make off with your bicycle.

Another disadvantage to the early bicycle racks was that they could not properly support the bicycles, and if somebody were to knock one bicycle down, the rest would follow just like dominoes. As a matter of fact, these early means of securing bikes were known at the time as ‘wheel benders’ because of such problems.

However, there have been many positive changes to the bicycle racks from those early days and now there is the Sheffield racks that got their name from the fact that such bicycle racks were first made in Sheffield, England. Such devices have thick metal bars that look like square arches and the top of the rack is found to be on the same level as the top bar of your bike’s frame, which makes it easy to secure the frame and support the bike as well.

One of the more popular bicycle racks that are favored by most bikers are those that are used for transportation, and are attached to the roof of an automobile. In fact, the better bicycle racks are those that suit all types of bicycles, and besides being useful for private transportation, they are also useful for use at schools, apartment buildings, universities as well as outside retail stores.

Thus, it is not surprising to find that bicycle racks are most popular in places where bikes get stolen very often, and that is why cycle-parking facilities use bicycle racks as well as mini-garages that can be locked, and there are even those parks that need to be patrolled to prevent bicycle thefts.

However, no matter which type of biking you take part in, a helmet is an essential accessory that every rider must wear. You could potentially suffer a very serious head injury if you were to fall off your bike or collide with something. So a helmet is not something that can be forgotten.

The next accessory which you may not have thought about is mountain bike gloves. Now most people wear gloves while they are riding because they keep the hands warm. However they do much more than that and they can in fact be a really good safety accessory. They help you to have a better grip on the handlebars which can be really helpful when you are going over rough terrain. They also provide a higher level of comfort which means that you can cycle for further without feeling the strain on your hands. Finally they can also help to cushion the hands when you fall. You always put your hands out to stop you when you fall and that can lead to nasty injuries. So wearing gloves can potentially stop these injuries from occurring.

Tandem Bicycles Are Built For Two

January 11, 2009 by Robert · Leave a Comment

Tandem bicycles have advantages and disadvantages depending on many variables. If there are two people on a tandem bicycle that are very honest, there probably will not be any problems with one person not pulling their own weight. The person on the back of a bicycle could get away with massive fraud if the person on the front of the tandem bicycle is not vigilant. The person on the front seat of a tandem bicycle will not be able to check easily on the efforts of their partner. They might be the only one pedaling the bicycle, and the person on the back could get a completely free ride.

A tandem bicycle might have disadvantages depending on the weight of the two riders that take their positions on one of these bicycles. A heavier person on a tandem bicycle will need more effort on the part of both riders. A tandem bicycle might produce extra work for the lighter person who might be much better off on a bicycle alone. Each rider might want to weigh these disadvantages before starting out on a trip. Tandem bicycles provide for a close bond for the two riders. In order to have a great ride, the two people on a bicycle will have to work together for a great time.

Tandem Bicycles Require Some Skill And Care

Riding one of these bicycles is not just as easy as riding a single bicycle. People need to have at least a bit of practice and knowledge before a positive experience one of these special bicycles. Two people working together can make a bicycle go faster, and the brakes need to be very good in order to stop a speeding tandem bicycle. The two riders need to be coordinated and organized before riding successfully. If one person is applying the brake while the other is pedaling furiously, the bike is not going to work perfectly. Proper coordination can make a significant difference in the movement of the ride. Working together to make a tandem bicycle operate can be a rewarding experience.

A tandem provides a nice experience for couples or family members that want to stay together. A parent can take their child for a great ride, and they will not have to worry about the child falling behind. The child will be with them all of the time. A couple can ride closely together on one of these wonderful bikes although a slower rider may inhibit a stronger rider when on separate bikes. These are also excellent for handicapped people. They will get the chance to get out and have a ride on a bicycle helped by a person without the same disadvantages.
