Here are Basics About Gary Fisher Bikes

It all started in 1968, when Gary Fisher was suspended from bike racing for having overly long hair. Unable to race in the usual way, he started cycling in the hills with others. At that time, riders mostly hiked their bikes up the hill, then rode down. However, that wasn't enough. Fisher wanted to be able to ride up, too.

That's why he started designing bikes that could do it, selling them to friends and other buyers. These tougher bikes allowed riders to have better control, even on paths full of dirt, roots, and rocks. Business took off fast, and Fisher started a company by 1979. By 1980, it was one of the biggest sellers of high end bikes, and by 1983, Fisher founded the National Off Road Bicycle Association - mountain bike racing's governing body.

During the 1980s, Fisher moved manufacturing to Japan and began marketing heavily, allowing him to sell more. That turned out to be bad for the company, which grew to be too large for a small company, but too small for a big one. It was sold to Anlen, in Taiwan, in 1991, and the company continued to tumble under less than ideal management. Fortunately, there was good news around the corner.

The company was purchased by Trek, a well established American company located in Wisconsin. Fisher was able to combine his creativity and well-known name with the stability of this long established manufacturer. Trek handles the day to day concerns, and Fisher is able to innovate, which is what he does best.

Riders on Fisher bikes have won World Championships, and models have been named the best in their years multiple times. Fisher is responsible for many innovations in mountain bikes, from the first production bikes with front suspension to the big-wheeled Two-Niner hardtail. They've also produced some of the lightest mountain bikes out there, using their design expertise to take aluminum and other light frames even further.

From the first bike Fisher made, produced from a 1940s Schwinn, a handful of road bike parts, and even some motorcycle parts, this company has come a long way. The line includes everything from highly engineered mountain bikes to luxury cycles and even kids bikes.
