Mountain Bike Brakes for Sale, Shimano, Avid

Just like any vehicle, properly functioning brakes are necessary for the safe operation of the bicycle. With mountain bikes, it's vital to have brakes that are always functioning properly in order to provide safe stopping. Imagine speeding downhill only to find that the brakes do not work. This type of situation could be quite dangerous and even fatal.

Mountain bikes can come with one of three popular braking systems; Disc brakes, V-brakes and Rim brakes. The most common on inexpensive bikes is the rim brake, also called cantilever brakes. Controlled by a lever on the handlebar, the rider squeezes the brake lever and the rim is squeezed from each side by a rubber pad, which causes the bike to stop. While they do work, they are not suitable for wet or muddy conditions.

Disc Brakes for the Serious Mountain Biker:

V-brakes, which are also called Linear-pull brakes work similarly to Rim brakes but tend to work better than Rim brakes. Disc brakes tend to be the brake of choice today for the most serious riders. Because disc brakes are mounted directly on the front fork and hub, they squeeze the rim and cause the bike to stop. Whether it is wet, dry, muddy or dusty, disc brakes tend to perform much better. The downside to a disc braking system on mountain bikes is the cost and also the added weight.
