Mountain Bike Derailleurs for Sale, Shimano, Sram
Similar to a transmission on a car, a derailleur is the gearing system that contains the chain and sprockets. With a derailleur, the rider moves a lever on the handlebar, which is attached to a cable. As they do this, the chain is forced over onto the next gear. The front derailleur has the job of moving the chain from side to side, while the rear derailleur moves the chain onto a different sprocket, either larger or smaller.
In mountain biking, shifting gears between speed and power and the ability to shift gears quickly is important. Many have had the experience of riding a bicycle and trying desperately to shift gears while maintaining momentum. Unfortunately a poor quality derailleur, which is standard on very inexpensive bicycles, is going to leave the rider unsatisfied with it's performance. An inexpensive derailleur will cost approximately $20-$40, but more expensive, higher quality models can easily exceed a few hundred dollars.

Good Quality Derailleurs Are the Key
For those with experience in mountain biking, and who demand the highest performance from their bike, a good quality derailleur is a great investment. Not only will it improve performance, but will also minimize the risk of mechanical breakdown while out on the trail.
