The bicycle fork is an integral part of any bike, with the job of holding the front wheel attached to the bicycle as well as steering the bike. In low cost bicycles the front fork is usually quite simple, but in better quality bicycles, the front fork often has some form of suspension. Front forks are usually made from strong metals including steel, titanium, aluminum, carbon fiber and even magnesium.
On mountain bikes, the suspension plays an important roll in absorbing the bumps that come with riding on rough terrain. Depending on the type of terrain that a rider will be exploring, a front fork will have varying levels of travel. For extremely rough terrain the front fork will be allowed to travel up to 300mm which will provide adequate comfort and maneuverability, even on the roughest terrain.
A good quality fork may come with the option to adjust the length of travel based on the type of terrain. For lots of uphill or even flat terrain, less travel is required, whereas bumpy surfaces may require more movement. For completely flat surfaces, some front forks will have the option to lock, allowing for no travel at all.
