All About Trek Bicycles - History and Models

Trek was established in 1975 as a subsidiary of Roth, an appliance distributor based in Milwaukee. They started making steel touring frames in Waterloo, Wisconsin in early 1976. At that point, there were only give people on the payroll. The headquarters are still located in Waterloo, but domestic assembly is currently done in the Whitewater, Wisconsin location, and most bicycles are build in China and Taiwan.

Trek started out hoping to enter the mid to high end cycle market, then dominated by Italian and Japanese models. They built nearly nine hundred hand brazed frame sets in the first year, and each sold for around two hundred dollars. Trek Bicycle was incorporated later in the year, and the first distributor of Trek cycles opened in 1977. In just three years, Trek sales were nearly two million dollars.

However, in the late 1970s, sales plateaued. There simply wasn't enough space to make the bicycles to meet the demand. That's why the new corporate headquarters and factory were built near Waterloo. By 1982, Trek was making bikes for the steel road bike racing market, and they'd built their first mountain bike by 1983. They started the Trek Components Group to offer accessories and aftermarket parts the next year.

Trek's first bonded aluminum frame appeared in 1985, a tricky process for a company that had previously specialized in hand brazed steel. A year later, Trek added a three tube carbon composite frame to their lineup. They also expanded their headquarters and shortly introduced cycling apparel as well. They then expanded into foreign markets, including Germany and Great Britain.

Trek announced its introductory line of bicycles, the Jazz brand, in 1989. These included kids bikes, and were made in Taiwan, but were discontinued by 1993. The first molded carbon fiber frame appeared the same year, and had a weight of only a little more than three pounds. Hybrid bikes came out a year later, providing the speed of a road bike and the comfort of a mountain bike.

Trek has been making fully carbon framed bicycles since 1992, and made their first carbon mountain bike frame in 1993. At less than three pounds, it was the lightest production mountain bike frame available. Their full suspension Y bike was introduced in 1995.

Women's specific designs (WSD) were introduced in 2000 to respond to the needs of female cyclists. These bikes include special proportions and sizing that make them more appropriate for female riders. During the 2000s, Trek has also acquired Villiger and Diamant, Swiss and German bicycle companies. They entered the Chinese market in 2005. Currently they offer a wide range of high quality mountain, road and other bikes for serious cyclists, casual riders and kids. You're sure to find the right mountain bike with Trek.
